Sunday Lunch with Isho - Part 1

Since Kit's been lagging from his duties yet again I'll bring you another installment of the Sunday Lunch series. This is the first of a two part selection of food related goods from our good friend Isho and as you can see he's included a Wu Tang special aperitif.

Isho's Main Course

Cannibal Ox - "Raspberry Fields" from The Cold Vein [2002]

Notorious B.I.G. - "What's Beef?" from Life After Death [1997]

KMD - "Peachfuzz" from Mr. Hood [1991]

De La Soul - "Pease Porridge" from De La Soul Is Dead [1991]

A Tribe Called Quest - "Ham & Eggs" from Peoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm [1990]

Wu Tang Dessert

GZA - "Liquid Swords" from Liquid Swords [1995]

Cappadonna - "Milk The Cow" from The Pillage [1998]

Method Man - "Biscuits" from Tical [1996]

Ghostface Killah - "Fish" from Ironman [1994]

Raekwon The Chef - "Ice Cream" from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx [1995]

Call off the search parties, I'm back

Buck 65 - "Food" from Square LP

Apologies to all for the lack of postage recently, this was due to me and the girlfriend going to see Buck 65 in Glasgow then on a wee holiday north to Orkney.

I went to check on the Earls Ltd. summer retreat but as you can see it's been a bit neglected (much like the blog).

There was nae internet where we were staying but the local music & game store in Kirkwall was holding it down with the latest video game action. As soon as I'm finished with Burnout Paradise I'm onto Horace Goes Skiing.

Some of you might have peeped this already from Isho's blog but here's the trailer for the new Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. I don't know what tunes are on it but I don't care I'm sold and I want one now.

Finally here's the latest video from Jamie Lidell for "Little Bit Of Feel Good" out on the 14th of April. Some of you may recognise the vocal from the Remdog remix we featured a few weeks back. If any of you fancy a shot at remixing it here's the shpiel from Jamie himself:

"Alright. It's time to give me a sonic haircut folks. I give you my voice you give me a new body. I'm all yours. hell YEP.

Remix the naked vocal from Little Bit of Feel Good however you damn well want and I'll check the results and pick out the gold from the shit. The bad from the super bad...

In short I will chose the one I'm feeling is to be crowned the feel goodest.

...so...triple exclamation marks all round and let's hear it folks!!!

Power to the people and as they say on tele "make it work!"

Let the image be some inspiration

love Jim

The Five Food Groups on Friday (tuesday)

So i committed my first and probably the most common bloggers sin, which is to say I'll do a weekly post and then let it slip. I did this remarkably quickly. Anyway it's Tuesday now and here are the next five in the weekly? Five Food Groups + a bonus track for your pleasure from a Frito Lay commercial.

Ice Cream Truck - Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf

Soda Pop - Vine Malloy

Ice Cream Man - Clover

Sandwich Commandments - Michael Showalter

BONUS TRACK!
Frito Bandito Theme! - Frito Lay

A/Deen Thugs Kill All Visiting Fans (apparently)

Just a wee belated thanks to John Rattray for giving The Earl Of Sandwich a big up in the the February issue of Sidewalk Magazine. He said that we were "definitely a damn good sandwich / juice bar" - his words not mine.

The eagle-eyed amongst you might have noticed that the photo above is from Alex Craig's fantastic "H'Min Bam" DVD; if you haven't seen it and you have even the remotest interest in skateboarding then I recommend you find a copy. The soundtrack is also exceptional and should be appearing on this blog sometime soon. In the meantime, here's a clip of John doing what he does best. Check out the manual about 2 minutes into the clip. Thanks to Alex Irvine for the photos.

Sunday (Liquid) Lunch

Since Kit is too busy listening to his Euro Gym House and working out to get buff(ty) I've taken over his responsibility to give you the five food groups for the week. Except instead of food related tuneage I've gone for the liquid diet...

Greetings Comrade, Pleased To Meet You

As you might have noticed A La Fu has joined the ranks of The Earl Of Sandwich blog, I haven't had a chance to teach him how to post yet but I have been assured that he'll be skooled soon. In the meantime he's given us this live mix he did at Advanced Music: Pleased To Meet You in Moscow to share with you all.

STOP PRESS:
I managed to get some words from Kenny about his recent trip so here you are:
"Minus 18...oocha. In true Scottish style the lack of foresight, nay, worry on approaching such an undertaking was truly scarce and ultimately a little foolish.

The assignment was to entertain a positively delightful young crowd at the ‘Pleased To Meet You’ night in Moscow. I’d been to Moscow before at a different venue and at another time of the year so I assumed this time of year would be decidedly colder. I read minus 16 and thought, yeah pretty chilly…the follow up then should have been; best get prepared…should have been.

My most modest of footwear and non-thermal gear did nothing to protect what was probably non-survival with 5 more minutes exposure inside the incredibly picturesque and symbolic Red Square. Still the first whisky in a (curious) wee bar we frantically found was the best ever measure I’ve had the pleasure of receiving.

The gig? Check the link for yourselves…and if you’re looking for a new, vibrant and diverse place to visit lets just say that once again I experienced some of the best hospitality from the most electrifying people in the world today.

I went to Moscow. There are no bears."

First Uncle John & Whitelock and now Allie Ambient...

Dead, game over, deceased, no more... Well Uncle John & Whitelock called it a day at the end of 2006 as the poster above shows so that's not really news, but Allie Ambient's departure is fresh off the press. But alas there's no need to despair as you all have a chance to see both reincarnations in one night. Tut Vu Vu is the latest outfit from former Uncle John & Whitelock members Raydale Dower [Bass], Matthew Black [Drums] and Jamie Bolland [Keyboards]. If you aren't familiar with Glasgow based horror R&B and dead soul stalwarts Uncle John & Whitelock then I sincerely suggest you hunt out their one and only album "There Is Nothing Else" on GFM Productions. I cannot stress enough how amazing they were live as anyone who witnessed one of their shows will surely testify. Since I don't have any new material from Tut Vu Vu to share with you here's a couple of tracks from Uncle John & Whitelock to give you a rough idea of what they may or may not sound like. The first one "Maryhill" is from their first ever release, a beautifully packaged 10" from back in 2003. A different version appears on the album but this is the song that persuaded me to swap and handful of dub 7's for a dozen copies of the EP back when I was working in The Cavern. The second one is "The Fold", the opening instrumental track from the 2005 album. I hear also that Jamie Bolland is also in a band with Jacob Lovatt the former singer for Uncle John & Whitelock but their name escapes me right now so I'll find out more for the future.

Uncle John & Whitelock - "The Fold" [from There Is Nothing Else LP]

Back to the tragic news of Allie Ambient's exit from the world of solo artistry. Well it's not all that tragic as it really means he's finally found a suitable band to back his cheeky tales of love, drugs and Aberdeen. High Society comprises of Allie, Psychedelic Jim, Midnight Mufasa and Ronnie Dunn and they'll be supporting Tut Vu Vu at The Tunnels in Aberdeen on Saturday the 22nd of March. Here's a couple of tracks from "Allie Ambient's Last Stand", a recording of his final performance. I'm not going to explain what they're about as storytelling is what Allie does best in my opinion.

Triple Decker mp3 Sandwich

First up is a nice wee appetiser for the hotly anticipated new Jamie Lidell LP. His 2005 release "Multiply" was one of my top albums of the past few years and is a firm shop favourite. This belter of a remix comes courtesy of Remi or rather his Remdog musical alter ego. He's got a free download EP coming soon so we'll be sure to keep you posted on that one.

Jamie Lidell - "Multiply (In A Major Key) [Gonzales Remix]"

The previous mix reminded me that I never did get round to recording in a big chunk of my vinyl and this 12" was in there, so here you are. Gonzales is someone who's stuff I can't say I've checked out but fell free to have a wee look yourselves.

Finally listening to that last one reminded me that I used to have an mp3 of Gonzales and TTC doing a nice version of their killer "Dans Le Club". It's not the greatest quality and I've no idea where it's from but I'd like to imagine that it's in the lobby of a fancy Parisian hotel and everyone involved is wearing dinner jackets.

Earl of Sandwich Mixtape: Volume 1

Here's an old mixtape (or mix CD if we're getting pedantic) I did back in 2005 when me and my old partner in crime Isho used to do a Sunday night at the now deceased Estaminet. It's a small taste of what I used to play for a portion of the evening but true to Isho's flyer design we did "drop more labels than a clumsy shoplifter" so it wasn't all hip hop on the night. In fact if you can name all the labels on the flyer I'll give you a special prize (offer is not open to Rockstar employees).

tracklist:

1. Four Tet - "Unspoken"
2. Four Tet / Demolition Man / Dj Vadim - "Unspoken / The Terrorist"
3. Franz Ferdinand - "Michael" (Thomas Eriksen Remix)
4. Chok Rok - "Happy Man"
5. Portishead - "Revenge of the Number"
6. DJ Shadow - "Six Days" (Remix ft. Mos Def)
7. Busdriver - "Kev's Nlistering Computer Tan And Driver's Rappers Rappers Monicker"
8. Ackie - "Call Me Rambo"
9. Roots Manuva - "Colossal Insight" (Part 2 Remix)
10. Rob Sonic - "Shoplift"
11. Mr. Scruff - "Ug"
12. DJ Vadim - "Up To Jah" (ft. Demolition Man)
13. D. Brown - "Tombuoy"
14. TTC - "Dans Le Club"
15. Dirtsman & Missy Elliot - "Get Impeccable" (Heatwave remix)
16. DJ Vadim - "Till Sun's In Your Eyes" (Version ft. Demolition Man)
17. M.I.A. - "Pull Up The People"
18. Ciara / Junior Rankin "Goodies" (Instrumental) / Explode (Vocal-Coobs Riddim)
19. Secret Frequency Crew - "Deep Blue"
20. Amon Tobin - "Verbal"
21. M.I.A. - "Hombre"
22. Mr. Scruff - "Spandex Man"
23. Edan - "The Science Of The Two" (ft. Insight)

You could copy it to one of these if you'd like to make it more authentic...

and play it on this...

Although you probably couldn't because the very smartly packaged USB stick is actually only 64mb. Apparently this is to make it more genuine to a C60 cassette but I reckon it's because they've got a shitload of practically useless 64mb memory sticks to get rid of. Surely a 128mb version would be truer to a C90 which was the real tape of choice for a mixtape. Both products are available from the utterly dreadfully named Suck UK but they do make some cool shit so perhaps I'll let them off.
